Cover Up or Clear Up?

When I hit the teenage years, embarrassing acne hit me, so my mom showed me how to apply foundation and powder to help cover my blemishes. In the same way, I have faults and problems in my life that are unattractive, and the Lord has the solution. Only He doesn’t “cover up” my faults…He “clears them up”. Why do we so often live with spiritual blemishes, when we don’t have to? Why do we prefer to exist with an unattractive spirit, rather than live with a beautiful spirit? Not only do we not have to remain in a blemished condition, but God expects us to let Him clear us up and make us right.

“Therefore we are confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please Him…” 2 Corinthians 5:6-9

It’s time for a spiritual makeover. It’s time to let God make us beautiful as only He can. The steps for a spiritual makeover are much like those you would expect for a physical makeover…just follow the ABC’s.

Arrive at the makeover session
Go before the Lord for help
Be aware of what your faults and flaws are
Find out what is displeasing to the Lord
Concede to the person giving you the makeover
Give up control, and let God have His way
Don’t quit in the process
Remain strong through the change
Exercise what you learned
Apply God’s Word and His plan for you

Looking at the Fourth of July & It’s Connection with Christmas

As we celebrate Independence Day, I wonder if we truly understand what we are celebrating, what we are remembering, what we are a part of. I would like to share some of our heritage with you now, as I found it in an article by David Barton, founder and president of Wallbuilders.

John Adams believed that the Fourth of July should become a religious holiday – a day when we remembered God’s hand in deliverance and a day of religious activities when we committed ourselves to Him in “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” Such was the spirit of the American Revolution as seen through the eyes of those who led it, evidenced even further in the words of John Quincy Adams, one who was deeply involved in the activities of the Revolution.

In 1837, when he was 69 years old, John Adams delivered a Fourth of July speech at Newburyport, Massachusetts. They had asked him to address them because he was old enough to remember what went on during the American Revolution, and they wanted an eye-witness to tell them of it! He asked them: “Why is it that, next to the birthday of the Savior of the world, your most joyous and most venerated festival returns on this day [the Fourth of July]? Is it not that, in the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer’s mission upon earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity?

According to John Quincy Adams, Christmas and the Fourth of July were intrinsically connected. On the Fourth of July, the Founders simply took the precepts of Christ which came into the world through His birth (Christmas) and incorporated those principles into civil government.

More than Words

Since high school, I have kept a notebook where I laid my heart on paper when I read particular Scriptures that encouraged or challenged me, and I recorded my own personal notes about those verses, about prayers, about what the Lord was speaking to me. Now that I am 25, I have a collection of binders and notebooks full of these special verses and thoughts.

Yesterday, I opened the pages again and pondered the truth in them. It is so encouraging to see on paper how my life has been molded by the Bible and the Holy Spirit. Those pages reminded me of how the Lord has always been faithful to me, and how He has guided my steps. It also challenged me to review areas of my life that I was once stronger in than I am now.

We must remember and cherish the Word of God spoken to us. I am grateful to the Lord for His presence in my life. He is not a distant God that I must please with rituals – He is my intimate Savior who loves me, who listens to me, who talks to me, who set me FREE from the bondage of sin that I was born in to. He gives me joy and peace and mercy, and because of Him, I LIVE!

“I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.” Psalm 119:32

Marriage Protection Amendment

The Federal Marriage Protection Amendment failed in the Senate on a procedural vote this morning. Opponents to the measure claimed repeatedly that the American people did not care about this issue, but it is not true, since tens of thousands of faxes, emails, phone calls, and letters were sent to Senate offices. The amendment has made headway since it was last voted upon in 2004. Keep yourself informed and have a voice! Each American has not only the right to speak up about our laws and goverment, but also a responsibility to do so.

Worth Remembering

The other day, I was flipping through a photo album of special moments I have spent with family and friends. I thought of how sad it would be if I had never experienced those moments. There certainly would not be a photo album to thumb through and revisit those memories.

Our special times with Christ are collected in our being much like our experiences captured on film are collected in an album. Imagine your spiritual photo album. Imagine you are flipping through it. How empty or full is your album with special moments spent with God?

We can’t expect to fill our album if we do nothing. I would not have a snapshot of my vacation to Disney World if I never went to begin with. I would not have a snapshot of my wedding if I never said, “Yes, I’ll marry you!” I would not have a snapshot of my best friend if I never made an effort to be a friend.

In the same way, we cannot expect to experience great things with God, if we never do anything. We will not have a snapshot of that perfect moment when God gives us complete peace, if we do not trust Him. We will not have a snapshot of divine healing, if we never ask Him for it. We will not have a snapshot of the time when God touches our heart in a way we have never felt before, if we do not seek Him.

You may be able to save up a few snapshots in your album of special moments with God, because He just chose to bless you with with them – and those times are special. But if you want your album to be full of special moments spent with God, you have to take the first step.

God will not force His presence in your life, but if you invite Him to take part, He will never decline the offer. He is waiting for His child to climb up on His lap and spend some time. That is a memory worth remembering.

“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.” ~Psalm 145:13

“The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” ~Psalm 147:11

Beauty in Change

Have you ever been walking and noticed something of value in a puddle? Perhaps a shiny quarter peeking from a muddy puddle, for example? Usually we are not willing to stick our hand in the muddy water to get the quarter, are we? In our lives, when we face a change, we just see a muddy puddle that we don’t want to go through, while God sees the shiny reward at the bottom.

Think about a current or future change in your own life…how do you feel about it…be honest.

Chances are that you have some negative feelings toward that change. You may even have all negative feelings about that change. Most changes, even good ones, can have negative aspects associated with them that can grab a hold of you and turn a good change into one that makes you miserable.

When I was first married, I left my family and everything else that was familiar in Kentucky to live in Montana with my new husband. That was a big change. Everything was new – my husband, apartment, church, job, town, friends – you name it. My marriage was a good change, of course. I married the man that I knew God wanted me to marry, and we were making a new start of our own that would bring us together. But even though these were good changes, I struggled with how to deal with all the newness of my married life on the other side of the country. Even though many sympathized with my feelings, they couldn’t make them go away. I was caught in a shiny, valuable change that left me looking only at the muddy water. I found myself mentally listing all the changes I had been through and using it to explain why I felt so crummy.

One morning on my way to work, after a previous evening of prayer on the deck of our apartment and a morning of Christian radio, the Lord gave me a simple thought that changed my perspective. I already knew it in my head, I suppose, but it’s different when the Lord speaks it to your spirit – “Are you going to use your list of changes to justify yourself or to glorify Me?” I realized that I could no longer use change as an excuse for my attitude, emotions, and mental state. I would use change as a reason to become stronger in my faith in the Lord.

Whatever the change you are going through, don’t let your negative feelings dictate your attitude and spirit – let God. He understands how you feel, but He has something better for you. It may not necessarily be a reversal of the change you’re experiencing, but He has beauty in the change for you.

One day, when everything surrounding the change in your life has come to pass, and God has taken care of you just as He promised in the beginning, don’t you want to be able to look back and say, “I knew that God would take me through, and that He had a purpose for me. I’m so glad I kept my confidence in Him. He has never failed me!”

When we try to handle change on our own or we become upset with God, we are actively displaying a lack of faith in God – which is not only terrible for us – it hurts God. When you don’t know what to do or how to handle change, it is never wrong to sit at the feet of Jesus and talk to Him about it. Let Him comfort, teach, and change you. Often a change in our lives necessitates a change in us. God knows EVERYTHING, He COMPLETELY understands you (even when you don’t), and He DESIRES to strengthen you.

Start looking at change through God’s eyes and be confident that He is able to keep you through ANY change.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” ~Jeremiah 33:3

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” ~Romans 8:28

Leading Worship 101

For those of you who lead worship on either a permanent or a temporary basis, I have some tips to share with you that I have learned over the years…

  • Projecting song lyrics: For the easiest readability of slides or transparencies, 1) Left align text (don’t center it), 2) Use a bold, sans serif font (such as Arial Black), 3) Don’t use all capital letters (they are harder to read), 4) Use at least a 16 point font.
  • Choosing songs: Keep in mind the message of the song you are choosing. For example, is the song all about heaven or all about God? Is it all about what we get or is it about who God is? The bottom line is this – when choosing a song, look at what the song is saying.
  • Practice so you and everyone else can worship: Practicing can be a hassle, but God blesses a prepared servant who wants to give only their best to Him. Many worship leaders are so concerned about sounding good and hitting the right note and coming in on time, that they cannot worship, much less lead others. Practicing eliminates this problem. If you and your worship team have previously practiced for the service, then the glitches have already been worked out, your mind is rested, and you are ready to worship. After all, if you aren’t worshiping, then all you’re doing is leading singing. God didn’t say in John 4:23 that He is looking for singers…He said He is looking for worshipers.
  • Be led by the Holy Spirit, not self: If the Holy Spirit is leading you to say something between songs or read a Scripture, then by all means be obedient. But if the Holy Spirit is not leading you to do so, please don’t feel like you must. In most cases, it is best to move directly from one song into another, because it encourages continuous worship. Unless the Holy Spirit directs you otherwise, you will encourage others to worship much more by worshiping yourself than you will by talking about it.
  • Worship privately: Worship the Lord throughout the week. Get alone with Him, and really, really love and worship Him. This will overflow into the worship services you lead and make a difference. Be genuine before God.

I strongly recommend the book The Praise and Worship Team Instant Tune-up by Doug and Tami Flather for understandable but thorough expert advice about leading worship.

My Profile

GROWING UP
Born and raised in Kentucky, I experienced a very happy and fulfilled childhood in my Christian home with my dad, mom, and younger brother. It was made ever sweeter when I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart at the age of six, and He has been there ever since. I thank God that I came to know Him at such an early age and that I had a family faithful to Christ and devoted to bringing me up in Him. I grew up in the Church of God and Assemblies of God. Growing up in church afforded me many wonderful opportunities to learn about ministry and serve my Lord, such as through worshiping Him in singing, teaching, dramas, playing piano, and leading worship.

EDUCATION
In 2003, I graduated from University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky, with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, a minor in Art, and a second minor in Communication Arts.

* Cynroc Business Development, Billings, MT – Graphic & Web Designer (2003-present)

TODAY

Following our college graduation in 2003, Tim and I married and followed the Lord in ministry. Four years later we were blessed with our daughter and two years after that we were blessed with our son.

Today we are living in West Virginia, where Tim is ministering as associate pastor and youth pastor, teaching special education, and coaching. I am thrilled to be staying at home with our children, homeschooling, continuing graphic and web design work, and creating items for my Etsy shop.

Over a short period of time, God has certainly used us in many ways, and each season of our lives has provided us with the opportunity to depend on Him even more. He is truly our Rock.
