A Pep Rally for My Spirit

Well, I just can’t help it. I just can’t get enough of the book of Acts. I have on several occasions begun to stop reading and start writing a post on something wonderful from Acts, but I’m so eager to keep reading, that I ditch the post. This has happened so many times over the last several days, that I have about given up on writing anything at all. My posts simply cannot compare to the perfect, exciting, tremendous words that have already been written in the Bible. So, I guess I would suggest that if you are reading this blog right now, you just leave and pick up your Bible!

For the Christian, the book of Acts is more exciting and thrilling than any swash-buckling story of pirates or any adventure movie. It is a deep-seeded truth in our spirit that grows as we read. Faith rises, truth is found, boldness is desired, and the Holy Spirit is sought on a new level as one reads of the many miracles, the anointed sermons, the bold testimonies, the bravery of those persecuted, and the raw desire to follow Jesus and make His Name known which was shown among the early Christians. Their passion and the faith almost makes me cry over my Bible as I read their accounts. These are not stories of old – these are principles, truths, and passion for Jesus and ministry that we should and can live by.

So, I will leave you with an excerpt from Acts to get you started on a pep rally for your spirit….

Acts 3:1-16

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.

continuing to Acts 4:1-31

The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. He is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:

‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.’ Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your  power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

continuing to Acts 5:12-21

The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.

Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people the full message of this new life.” At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people……

Puff Painting – Homemade Style

Puff Paint Recipe (adapted from recipe found here)
• 1 tablespoon self-rising flour
• 1 tablespoon salt

• a few little drops of food coloring
• water

  1. Mix the equal parts of flour and salt. Then add some water to make a nice smooth paste. Add and mix in food coloring.
  2. Paint away on a nice thick sheet of cardboard. We used the white inside of Little Debbie boxes. Whatever you use, make sure it is cut to fit inside your microwave.
  3. Microwave the design on high for 15 – 30 seconds (microwaves vary, of course) until the paint puffs and it’s all nice and dry.

Ava and Landon turned their creations into large birthday cards for Daddy.

Our Make-Do Kite

Sometimes you want something you can’t have (like a kite, in our case), so you just have to color one of your own and stick it up on the wall and be okay with that. We added a real bow and ribbon string to give our kite a little dimension. I like it. Maybe our wall kite will inspire you and your little ones to create the wall version of something they really like.

Early Learning Exercises

Patterns Are Fun
You don’t need a printed worksheet for your child to make/practice patterns. Make your own pattern sheet for your child, by using different shapes or pictures and colors. Make them simple or complicated depending on the age of your child, and then let them at it. Ava loved finishing the patterns I created for her. It gave her practice in more than just identifying patterns – she also used her knowledge of colors, used her drawing skills, and even did some spacial planning.

Letter Recognition
Here’s one way to reinforce recognition of particular letters. In this case, we were working on recognizing vowels. I cut a few simple slogans out of a magazine and glued them to a sheet of paper. At the top, I wrote the vowels for her to see and trace. Then I gave Ava a marker and let her trace the vowels while we talked again about the sounds each one makes. Then I gave her time to determine which letters were vowels. Once she began to correctly circle or color-in the vowels, we continued discussing the sound that vowel made.

Fingerprints Change

Did you know that fingerprints change? Fingerprints are altered with hard work, cleaning solutions, constant rubbing, etc. I suppose I always assumed that your fingerprint was deeper and that as skin wore off, for example, the same fingerprint was still there somehow. But actually, your fingerprint changes over time, with wear, with activity. Getting an accurate inked fingerprint is more difficult when fingertips have been exposed to a lot.

My own fingertips have been through a lot. There was that oil painting I spent days and days on when I was in college that I used my finger to paint with (I know that’s odd. 🙂 There are the cleaning solutions I have used. There is all the crafting and other projects I do. I doubt my fingerprints are extremely changed, but I’m sure they have been affected to some extent.

We are affected.
If we imagine that our heart and soul is our fingerprint and all the things we do are the agents of change that are working on our fingerprint, I wonder how we are doing. The fact is, we are not catalysts. We ARE affected by the things around us. We are affected by the people with whom we surround ourselves, the places we go, the stresses in which we live, the projects in which we involve ourselves, the conversations we have, and so on. While we are uniquely ourselves, as our fingerprint is unique, we can be changed or dulled.

Take time to evaluate.
Sometimes it is good to stop and evaluate what is happening in our lives. Some things are good and/or necessary, and some things are negatively affecting us. We should evaluate these parts of our lives honestly. It is up to us to protect and nurture the parts of ourselves which God wants to grow from the things that take their toll on us. Good to think about. Good to pray about.

Here is an evaluation exercise to help you honestly assess how you are changing… grab an old fashioned pen and paper.

  1. Set the timer for 5 minutes and list (in phrase form) some specific things that are dominating your life. There are no rules, just start listing.
  2. Do you have several things jotted down? Now go down your list one by one, and think carefully about how each thing is affecting you. Is it affecting you positively and in a Godly, beneficial way? If so, write a “P” beside it. Or is it affecting you negatively? Is it hurting your relationship with God, harming you, or causing problems? If so, write an “N” beside it.
  3. Now go back over your list again and pray specifically about each listed item. If the item is good for your fingerprint (heart and soul), then thank God for that part of your life and invite Him to be the Master. If the item is changing or dulling your fingerprint (heart and soul), then take some time and pray about it. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom and to intervene according to His will. Then listen and be open to His direction.

I hope you took this challenge to heart and took some time to let the Lord speak to you. He wants to work in your life and give you good things. We just have to follow Him, love Him, and obey.

    Happy Valentine’s Day

Want to see our valentines this year? The kids made special, unique cards for family members. And then they also painted cards which we cut to the same dimensions as their boxes of candy hearts to give friends. Their valentines (with their messages written on the backs) are wrapped on each side of the candy heart boxes.

    Child’s Recipe Book

Ava loves pretend cooking in her little kitchen. Suddenly, I realized that it would be perfect for her to have her very own Recipe Book. So we got to work! Ava cut out magazine pictures of foods that interested her, and then she glued them onto 4×6 index cards. I wrote the title at the top and then she wrote the recipe below. This was really fun and it is an ongoing project as there are many more slots left in our book that need to be filled with yummy recipes. Our book is a photo album purchased for about $1 from Walmart or Dollar Tree. This idea is great for older kids to keep their favorite recipes in, as well. The photo album’s pages make it easy to wipe off grease and spattered food! In fact, I keep my own recipes in clear sheet protectors in a binder for that very reason!

    The Perfect Watering Can

After finishing breakfast one morning, I noticed that the Hungry Jack syrup bottle just seemed too cute to throw away, so I didn’t! I washed it out and used Oops! (or you could use Goo Gone) to get the sticky labels off. And there it was, the most perfect watering can. It’s small enough that even Landon can use it. And the smiley face spout and small lip are perfect for pouring the water without it gushing out. Plus, the closing top is great for avoiding splashes when it’s being carried around. So, next time you are at the grocery pick up a Hungry Jack syrup bottle and just figure that you are paying for the watering can and getting the syrup for free. 🙂

    Alphabet Cake Game

Here is a game we made up to give us another way to practice phonics. I affectionately call it the “Alphabet Cake Game” because it looks a bit like a cake or brownies if using brown paper, but you can use any paper in any pan and call it what you like. Notice I omitted the letters “X” and “Z”, because of the mathematical logistics of my grid. Also, to reinforce letter recognition, you could use all uppercase letters on one side of the paper and all lowercase letters on the other side. Then you can just flip it over for another game.

“The Rules” are easy. Have your child:

    1. Roll something (we used a lifesaver) into the pan
    2. Say the name of the letter
    3. Say the sound that letter makes
    4. Come up with a word that starts with that letter
    5. Repeat for as long as you want

Of course, you can adapt this to fit your child and what you are wanting them learn or practice.

Here is a video of me introducing the game to wiggly Ava. You will see why I suggest sitting at a table or on the floor, but the bed (unlike the rest of the room) happened to be clean at the time! 🙂

Good Isn’t Very Exciting, Or Is It?

Sometimes as Christians, we tend to focus in on a particular attribute of God that we like or that we have experienced in our own life. That is not to say that we don’t recognize or appreciate all of who God is, but sometimes it’s easy to get carried away by a specific part. For example, I tend to focus in on the victorious aspect of God – overcoming, deliverance, power, etc. Some people focus in on the loving aspect of God or on healing or another wonderful part of who God is.

This is why when I hear worship songs about God’s goodness, I have a tendency to yawn. Goodness is not generally one of the attributes of God that I get all excited about. But it should be! Today, the Holy Spirit reminded me that if it were not for His goodness, my life would not be what it is today. We often become overwhelmed (in our humanity) with our problems and troubles and hurts, but our lives and our world would be much worse (if they even existed) were it not for the goodness of God. Indeed, our God is good! The balance of everything is held in His hands, and we should rejoice that He is good! Our very soul (which He created) has eternal hope because He is good! And He wants NO ONE to perish but for each of us to have eternal life. So much so, that He sent Jesus. And the gospel message is ours, because our God is good! He has completely made the way for each of us to live fully in Him and to spend eternity in heaven and not in hell. The choice is ours! Thank God the Holy Spirit works in hearts to reveal Himself to us so that we may know Him!

I am so glad that God and Satan, or God and any other god, are not equals, and that our good God HAS WON! (See, I’m turning this into the victorious aspect, aren’t I? – I just can’t help myself!)

Is there an aspect of God that you focus on more than others? There is nothing wrong with that – God can use your enthusiasm and experience in that area to encourage and minister to others. With that said, let’s allow ourselves to absorb even more of who God is and take in His fullness as much as our carnal bodies can stand! He is such an AWESOME God!

Thank you, God, that you are good and your mercy endureth forever!

    Gift Wrapping Station

Ava LOVES wrapping gifts. I mean, she really LOVES it! So, one day I got smart and made her a little wrapping box of her very own. It includes tape (because she always takes mine!), scissors, bows, small boxes, small gift bags, and the most important thing – wrapping paper! I cut the wrapping paper from our large rolls and wrapped it around paper towel cardboard tubes. Works like a charm! And it is terribly cute! She enjoys wrapping all sorts of little items from our house and giving them to Landon. Sometimes I get one, too!

See how happy she was when I gave it to her?

    She’s good.

WRAPPING UP LOVE TO GIVE TO JESUS

    Planning for a Special Birthday

A friend from church was kind enough to invite my children, along with other families, to visit her family’s home and celebrate Christmas with a birthday party for Jesus. The children were to bring a baby-related present for Jesus, which would be given to a local outreach. Her party was carefully planned with love and focused completely on the Savior. And what a reminder it was to me…
