Coundown Card & Time for Preschoolers

Ava’s birthday is coming SOON! My little girl will be 4 years old! I didn’t intend for her to know one month in advance that her birthday party was coming. Two weeks in advance would have been enough. But, the little gal is as sharp as a tack, and she figured it out. As a result, I kept getting the thrice daily question, “When is my birthday?! When is my birthday?! When?!”

Countdown Card
So, I made her a Countdown Card to help her make it to the big day. The card has actually cut down tremendously on the “When is my birthday going to be here?” question… Which is great for me, and it’s also easier for Ava to handle the time span.
Also, to help her get through the month, I am letting her participate quite a bit in preparing for her birthday party. I am keeping a lot of things as a surprise, but I’m letting her help on some of the projects, too. Why not? (I’ll be sharing some of our birthday projects as the days goes by.)
Time for Preschoolers
On a side note, when my brother and I were little and didn’t know how to tell time, my mom would help us understand time by using tv shows. For example, if we were on a car trip and we wanted to know how much longer it would be until we arrived, Mom would say, “It will be one Mister Rogers” (30 minutes) or “It will be one Sesame Street and one Mister Rogers” (an hour and a half). So, I use the same concept with my children, and it works really well.

Are You a Smudge Stick?

When I draw with charcoal, I use a smudge stick. It is actually properly called a “tortillion”, but I have always called it a smudge stick. When rubbed on the charcoal, it smudges the black charcoal onto the paper and creates shades of gray. It can be used to fade harsh lines, and it’s great for creating a gradual transition between black and white.
You know, the Bible is full of priciples, morals, facts, and truths, that are simply black and white. They are clean-cut, matter-of-fact, just the way it is. I love knowing right from wrong. It makes life simple and makes decision-making a breeze.
I think it’s sad that we try to smudge the line between black and white to create a comfortable shade of gray in our own lives. We read one of God’s truths in the Bible, but we tell ourselves that it isn’t meant for us. God convicts our heart about something we have been doing but shouldn’t and instead of immediately repenting, we listen to the advice of others. And it goes on. We take God’s “black and white” and we try to smudge it. When we become a smudge stick, at best, we miss out on the good God has for us, and at worst, we find ourselves on a path headed away from God.
I prefer to stick with the simplicity and good that comes from following God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. I don’t want to justify anything. I don’t want to try to wrap my mind around the why’s of everything. I don’t want to feel confused and pulled in different directions.
God Has His Reasons

God isn’t trying to confuse His children any more than I am trying to confuse Ava or Landon. God doesn’t tell us on one day that we should watch what we say, and then on the next day tell us that we can shoot our mouths off. I don’t tell Ava that she can jump on the couch on some days and not on other days. She would always be confused, never knowing if she was allowed to jump on the couch or if she would be punished if she jumped on the couch. I am not trying to trick her. I want her to know what she can expect all of the time. She is not to jump on the couch. If she does, she will be punished. It’s for her own good. I don’t want her to get hurt by jumping on the couch. And I also don’t want her to waste her energy trying to figure out if she should try jumping on the couch today or not.

Wisdom Outweighs Reasoning
My wisdom outweighs Ava’s reasoning. “But Mommy, I’m a kangaroo!” is not going to change my mind. She is still not to jump on the couch. “But Mommy, this way I can see up high!” is not going to change my mind either. It’s silly to think that her reasons for wanting to jump on the couch could ever justify her and give her cause to jump on the couch and gain my approval for it. Isn’t it silly to think that we could ever justify ourselves and give ourselves cause to do what we want – nevermind what God says – and gain His approval for it anyway?

When In Doubt… Just Do What’s Right
Fewer things are “gray” than what we like to admit. I can think of TONS of issues, even in the Christian community, that are considered “gray.” I doubt that God sees them as gray. If we seek Him (truly), He will help us see what is black and what is white. If you find yourself turning into a smudge stick on a particular issue/topic, then chances are that you are trying to justify something that is not God’s best for you. Why do you want that? Give it up and do what is best.

My Own Little Smudges
I am a pretty guarded television watcher. I don’t watch just anything. But recently, there was one particular show that I had been watching, that was very entertaining but had some “stuff” in it that was wrong. I was a smudge stick for several weeks. I told myself…

“All the shows have something in them that I disagree with. What makes this show any worse than them.”
“Maybe in the next episode or two, they’ll drop the bad stuff.”
“I have more strength and discernment than the average Joe. I can watch this, know that it is wrong, and know that I won’t become like that.”
“Everyone else, including many other Christians, whom I know personally, watch this show.”

Maybe you can relate. Then one day, I had enough. I made the decision to listen to the Holy Spirit telling me that He didn’t want me watching it, listen to the Bible, which tells us what we should be thinking about (Philippians 4:8), and quit being stupid. That show was adding no value to my life. It was making me more tolerant of and numb to things that were clearly wrong (which only leads to more smudging). And it was actually hindering my walk with the Lord. I was still walking with Him, but how can my relationship with Him not be negatively affected when I am being disobedient? When I turned the show off for the very last time, I felt really good. I felt cleaned off. It felt good to shake off the junk and it felt good to know that I was pleasing the Lord.

Accept the Challenge
“Gray” areas come in all shapes and sizes. The one thing they have in common, is they do not get us any closer to God and they carry with them the great risk of weakening our walk with Him. Walking in the delusional gray is not a healthy or a happy place to be.

Perhaps there is already something in your life that shouldn’t be there or something missing that should be present. God has already shown you what it is through the Bible or laid it on your heart through His Holy Spirit (By the way, the Bible and the Holy Spirit never contradict), but you have been trying to smudge the line. Now is the time to pray and turn it over to the Lord.

If there is not already something in your life that you have been trying to turn into a muddy shade of gray, you may be tempted to do so sometime down the road. Make up your mind today that when that time comes, you won’t hesitate, you won’t try to justify, you won’t try to make it a gray area. Decide now that you will quickly do what God has told you to do. Period.

For Our Good

God’s gave mankind laws and precepts that are for our good. His ways are good and when His ways are followed, we benefit! He is consistent, He’s all-knowing, and He has the wisdom we should be seeking, so following His ways is hands-down, the way to go.
Psalm 119:97-104
Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.
Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me.
I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.
I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.
I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word.
I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.

Seed Packet Tutorial

Ava has been cutting out flower pictures from magazines, and it only seemed fitting that she should have seed packets to glue them onto. So, we made these little seed packets from blank paper, Ava decorated them, and she then filled them “seeds” (a.k.a. beads & rice).
These little seed packets don’t have to be for pretend seeds; you could store real seeds in these packets and plant them next spring (as I am doing). These would make a unique gift for the garden-lover. They are also the perfect size for gift cards, so you could use this tutorial to make an envelope for a gift card. I’m sure there are lots of other uses you can come up with, as well!

Homemade Fruit Leather

I discovered a recipe for Homemade Fruit Leather at Tricia’s blog How Sweeter It Is. She actually found the recipe in the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. I was excited to try this for our household, since my husband’s garden keeps producing strawberries and this process of making the fruit leather is so easy (you only need a blender/food processor, a baking pan, cling wrap, and an oven). You can make it with other fruits, too! In fact, we made Pineapple Fruit Leather a few days later. Read the instructions here at Tricia’s blog.

Turtle Hotel

“MOMMY!!! Come here!!! There’s a turtle on our sidewalk! Mommy, Can we make a house for it?”

Well, why not? We didn’t make a house exactly, because we didn’t expect Mr. Turtle to take up permanent residence, but we had fun making a Turtle Hotel. We even provided him with a little water and dandelion leaves. But it was a quick stay for Mr. Turtle. He had places to go and things to do. Oh well. Thanks for stopping by, Mr. Turtle!

I AM a Christian

“You are a Christian, aren’t you?” he asked.

A gentleman in my neighborhood asked me this question last week as the kids and I were taking a walk and passing his home. He and I have only exchanged pleasantries from time to time when he happens to be doing yard work and we happen to be taking a walk. This time he surprised me when he asked, “You are a Christian, aren’t you?” My response was a strong “Yes! How did you know?” He replied that he could tell by my spirit.

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” – 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
We look alike.
My mom has told me that when I was a little girl I looked so much like my dad that sometimes when she would take me with her to my dad’s office for lunch, someone my mom didn’t even know would stop us in the state office building and say, “That’s Ron’s daughter, isn’t it!” I like being associated with my dad. Naturally, as a child of God, I am also now delighted to know that someone can see my heavenly Father in me before even knowing me.

I am complete in Christ.
My encounter with our neighbor also reminded me of the amazing wholeness that comes from identifying myself with Christ. Being a Christian is just that – BEING. Being a Christian is not a role I step into on Tuesday and out of on Friday. It is not a position from which I can get fired or promoted. It is not a word I call myself because I attend church. It is who I AM because I have given my heart, soul, and life to Jesus Christ. Being a Christian is the deep-down, soul-knowing, spirit-awakening, heart-driven life I am living. I am His and He is mine. No man, no tragedy, no circumstance, no enemy can destroy my soul. My very being is safe and headed to heaven for eternity. As the Bible says in Hebrews 13, “What can mortal man do to me?”

Calling myself a Christian – a follower of Christ – completely expresses who I AM because of Christ. My interests and my roles change constantly, and while those things are part of me, they are not all of me. My identity lies fully in Christ. My heart beats every moment for my Savior, and one day when the trumpet sounds, I will be with Him by no power of my own, but because of Jesus’ blood that has washed my soul!

Oh, yes! I AM a Christian!

The Girl’s Got Rhythm

We use old canisters like formula cans, peanut cans, etc. and turn them into drums. Below is a video of my creative three year old making up her own songs and playing quite a beat! If you teach Sunday School or another children’s class, these cans – turned drums – could be an easy way to spice up some songs during your class time. We covered ours with paper, but it isn’t necessary. Sometimes the can sizes will be such that you can stack them inside each other for easy storage – always a bonus, in my book! Here’s my little Princess Drummer…

Make Your Own Postcards

I know I post a lot about mail, but I can’t help it. We love it. Postcards are a simple and less expensive way to send some love… The easy way to make a postcard is to get a couple 4×6 index cards and glue them together (for stability). Then let your child go to town decorating the front side and then writing a message on the backside. If you don’t have index cards on hand, you can always cut some heavy paper and make them that way.

Little Outings

“It takes so little to make a child happy, it is a pity grown people do not oftener remember it and scatter little bits of pleasure before the small people…” – Louisa May Alcott, Under the Lilacs
Ava and I have been able to spend some alone time lately, and because we spend so much time at home, I have been taking her out of the house for a little while. We don’t have any beautiful, public gardens for my little flower-lover to enjoy, so sometimes it’s nice to go to a home improvement store or nursery and just browse around the flowers and plants. It’s not the same, but Ava likes it. And it’s nice for me, too, to take some time to look around and focus instead of hurriedly purchasing items on an errand run.
Here are some other little outings we have been up to… What do you like to do with your child? We are always interested in more ideas.
  • Ice Cream Outing: We have made a trip to Sonic where I let Ava move up to the front passenger seat and enjoy a dollar ice cream sunday while we talk or listen to her favorite music in the car.
  • Fun at the Park: Let’s not forget the park. Definitely a favorite.
  • Library Time: The library is another favorite. Check to see if your library has storytime or other programs you may want to check out.
  • Popcorn Outside: Popcorn isn’t just for enjoying movies. We have been popping a bag and taking it outside for a sunny afternoon snack.
  • Walking: With this beautiful weather, we have been taking lots of walks. Here are some ways we have spiced them up… 1) Sometimes, Baby Carrie gets to come along in her own stroller, 2) Sometimes we have “Dinner Walks” – which means I put my children in the stroller and then toss them each a sandwich and a travel cup; then we take off around the neighborhood :), and 3) “Bedtime Walks” are a favorite, too. At dusk, I dress the kids in their pajamas, let them each pick out a favorite blanket and stuffed animal, and put them in the stroller. Then I recline their seats and we head out for a quiet “sleepy time” walk.

With Passion

This Easter, we have meditated on the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and thanked Him for His precious blood. We have also rejoiced that He is not dead – He is alive! So, now what? Well, the season of giving thanks to Jesus isn’t over, and while the “Easter” holiday has ended, our hearts full of thanks are still erupting …. so, we now….
  • celebrate with passion, because He is returning for us one sweet day!
  • study His Word, because we are privileged to have it!
  • worship Him with passion, because He is Lord!
  • serve Him with passion, because time is short and we want to follow Him with all that we are!
Praises and honor and adoration to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords who alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life! And through Him, we may be saved! Below is a song of celebration, which I particularly love…
“And everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved.” – Acts 2:21

Do You Love Me?

Think of a person who you love more than anything. Now imagine that person asking you, “Do you love me?” How would you reply?

I was asked this question today on a quiet evening walk around the neighborhood, when my three year old daughter softly asked, “Mommy, do you love me every day?” My heart-felt reply was, “I love you every day, every moment, for as long as I live.”

Have you ever wondered, “Does God love me?” I want to assure you that just as you know the immense love you have for that special person you thought of at the beginning of this post, God loves you immensely – even more than you are capable of loving. So if you wonder, “Does God love me?” I can tell you, no matter who you happen to be, reader, that God does love you – with an amazing and everlasting love. You can imagine Him saying to you, “I love you every day, every moment. I gave my one and only Son so that you can know me, know life, know eternal life, because I love you that much. Oh yes, I love you.”

Sharing the Message of Easter – Jesus!

If you make Easter cards, remember to leave one taped on your mailbox for the mail man, the garbage can lid for your garbage men, and for whoever else! We did that today, and Ava waved from the window as she watched the anticipated moment when her cards were discovered. She also enjoyed hollering, “Hi! I left you a card! You can keep it! Don’t throw it away!”

You may even consider letting your child make a card for him/her to take with them the next time your family leaves the house. Let them choose to whom they would like to hand their card (you’ll be with them). They may choose the employee at the checkout counter, another child at the grocery store, or the librarian… everyone should have the message of Jesus shared with them! Today during our walk, Ava gave an Easter card to an elderly man who lives nearby. He was so happy and touched to receive it!
