Book Island
Welcome to Book Island!… A destination island located conveniently behind our classroom door where reading doesn’t take any space but my kids feel like they are doing something fun during the school day! This is also a great way to motivate summer reading!
I found this tree and the banana cutouts at a Parent-Teacher Supply Store. Once I rounded up our favorite stuffed monkey for cuddling, a beach towel, a lei, and a bucket of books, Book Island was born, and my kids loved it! We used the bananas to record the books we read, and we also turned Book Island into snack time. Each morning I added a snack bag for each into the reading basket. When the door is open, the tree and decor are hidden, and reading island disappears until the next time they go on a reading adventure!
If you would like to try something similar but aren’t sure of the theme or materials, visit a Party Supply Store for inspiration, and, of course, there’s always online shopping! Landon is asking for us to have Book Island again this year. I’m thinking about incorporating a bean bag this time, since both kids are as tall as me now!
